The New York Guard’s 7th Civil Affairs Regiment
The New York Guard is a professional, all volunteer state militia that, among other things, works closely with and directly supports the New York National Guard. In addition to its support of the New York National Guard, the New York Guard has also worked with and/or supported many other state, city and local agencies and/or governmental entities.
The 7th Civil Affairs Regiment (the “7th Regiment”) of the New York Guard’s 88th Brigade is an incredibly active, vibrant and important part of the New York Guard and its mission. This elite regiment’s current, main mission is to provide legal services, legal direction and varied forms of legal advice and training to service-members deployed overseas or actively engaged in service within the State of New York, as well as military retirees and their families. In addition to these client groups, the 7th Regiment has also worked with other service members in the tri-state area, various other groups and entities on an as needed basis. The Seventh Regiment has served, and is ready to serve all of the branches of the military services of the United States and the State of New York. The Seventh Regiment also trains its lawyers in various fields of law and provides free continuing legal education programs recognized by New York State for service members of all branches in any status in New York State.
A fundamental part of the services provided by the men and women of the 7th Regiment is to provide those we service with wills, powers of attorney, living wills and/or health care proxies, related legal advice, and training and presentations upon request, such as service members' rights, the law of war, avoidance of discrimination and sexual harassment. These legal services are provided, at no cost, to all of the "clients" we work for and with, by a varied, unique and highly experienced group of attorneys from numerous legal disciplines. The group of professionals comprising the 7th Regiment includes not only practicing attorneys but also judges, legal support and other classes of professionals. In performing valuable services for the service members and other individuals and groups in need of these legal services, work in the regiment also provides substantial and valuable opportunities for the continued professional development of its individual members, opportunities for advancement within the Guard itself and professional network.
While operating at the highest professional levels at all times, the regiment provides a fun, collegial environment in which to work, learn and contribute. All of our members serve on a voluntary basis, and most members find that the work we do in conducting our mission is not time consuming or overly demanding. Notwithstanding this fact, service with the 7th Regiment offers all those who participate an opportunity to have fun, form new relationships, learn and, perhaps most importantly, to give back in a big way.
